Carbon Conversion factors (sometimes called ‘greenhouse gas conversion factors’) are used to calculate a Carbon Footprint. Carbon conversion factor values for the UK are calculated and provided by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Defra update these conversion factors annually.
They can be found at http://www.ukconversionfactorscarbonmart.co.uk/
In reporting Fife Council’s Carbon Footprint for 2013/14 the carbon conversion factors below were used.
Carbon Conversion Factors used for Fife Council’s 2013-14 Carbon Footprint
Carbon conversion factor
|Electricity||0.48357||kg of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per kWh of energy used|
Pool Car Mileage
|5% biodiesel||2.53791||kg of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per litre of fuel used|
|Petrol (av. biodiesel blend||2.2144|
|Business Mileage||Car||0.306146||kg of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per mile driven|
| Divide kilogram (kg) by 1,000 to convert kgs of carbon emissions into tonnes of carbon emissions.|
